Two Years Before the Mast

No, this has nothing to do with Richard Henry Dana's book, though he's an interesting character and the book is worth a read.  This is about me.
More accurately, it's about this blog/blawg.
I've now been doing this for two years.
The first post was May 18, 2009.  It laid out an ambitious agenda for this thing.  remarkably, I've actually done some of what I said I would, though the blog has taken on something of a life of its own.
And I've put up 651 posts.  (This will be 652 when it goes up.)  That's 0.89 posts a day.  Every day.  Add in the ones I've started to write and scrapped and it comes remarkably close to one a day.
They're not all interesting (even to me, in retrospect) of course.  Certainly they're not all deeply insightful.  Frankly, they're mostly just dashed off in a half hour or so.  (Greenfield's faster.)
But what's the point?
As it says in the sidebar, I'm writing for me and stand more or less (sometimes more, sometimes less) behind what I write.  I like to mouth off.  I care about a lot of stuff and have pretty strong opinions.  I like to argue.  And I like to write.  This gives me an opportunity to do all of that.
Does it get me any work?  I'm quite certain it does not.  In fact, I'm pretty sure it's cost me a case or two.  But it satisfies.  That's no small thing.
And I've made some friends (even though I've never actually met any of them; no, wait, I think I met one).  It turns out that we've got something of a community, we in the criminal defense blogging biz.  Some of us, at least.  It's good to know that, even if they sometimes (mostly?) think I'm a jackass.
Cause hey, this is me.  Warts and all.  Except that when it counts, I revise and edit.  And proofread.
Two years!  Good grief!
More to come.
Like it or not.

  1. I remember when you were just a baby. You may not have gotten work, but you've contributed enormously. Thanks.

I'm glad you started this blawg. It's a great inspiration.

  3. I like it and I'm glad you write. I don't have the necessary background to understand some of your posts, but what I do understand I either agree with or see some merit in your opinion.

Of course, this is coming from a man who thinks everyone should own a machine-gun and 10,000 rounds of ammo for it.

    Keep up the good work!

  4. Congratulations on two years of solid writing. As another of your non-lawyer readers, I have a feeling I'm missing some of what's going on here, but it's still pretty damned fascinating.
